Textbook Stipends

The Annual Books and Supplies Stipend is a benefit of up to $1,000 paid to Post 9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33) students based on enrollment. This dollar amount is subject to change per the VA. 

How it Works

• The VA considers 12 credit hours per semester to be full-time.
• The VA assumes a full-time student takes 24 credits over two semesters — fall and spring — so the $1,000 benefit is spread over those 24 credits. Each credit hour is worth $41.67 in a textbook stipend ($1,000/24 credits).
• If a student takes more than 12 credits in the first semester, the VA will pay out that many credits-worth of textbook stipends. For example, a student registered to take 15 credits fall semester will receive $625 in stipend. ($41.67 x 15 credits = $625)
• The remainder of the $1,000 will be paid in the following semester. For example, a student who received $625 in book money during fall semester would receive $375 for spring semester, no matter if the credit load exceeds 12 credits. ($1,000 - $625 = $375)

Eligibility Stipulations

The above example is based on 100 percent Post 9/11/ GI Bill® eligibility. For students at less than 100 percent:

• For example, a student who has 80 percent eligibility, the textbook stipend would be $1,000 x 80 percent = $800 total spread over fall and spring semesters.
• $800/24 credits = $33.33 per credit.
