Funding Opportunities

CLASS Funding for Student Research and Creative Works

Burt Berlin generously established a fund to provide students who study the humanities to pursue projects, opportunities, and endeavors that will enhance their education in the humanities. The College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences is seeking proposals from students with such an opportunity or project that would benefit from financial support.

Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate students who are majoring in the humanities (English, general studies, majors in the School of Global Studies, music, theatre arts, history, JAMM, philosophy, and communication) or who are pursuing humanities projects may apply. Students must be CLASS majors who will also be enrolled for Fall 2025 and in good academic standing. Awards from this fund are made to students displaying extraordinary talent in, or affinity for, a particular field or area of study, and who have achieved strong academic success to date in their college studies or who may be motivated or otherwise benefit markedly by the opportunity afforded by the award. The award's purpose is to support undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activity.

Students may apply for up to $3,000 to support their projects or enhancement opportunities. A clear and detailed budget for these funds will need to be included with your application. The project or opportunity should occur over the summer and/or fall 2025 semester. Funds must be used while the student is enrolled and in good standing. If used during summer, the student must be enrolled for the following fall semester.

Scholarship Enhancement Opportunities may include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Participation in seminars, meetings, workshops, competitions, contests, and related activities at off-campus sites.
  2. Participation in special projects designed to advance your knowledge and understanding of a particular subject matter, which involve fees and expenses to compete or participate in projects.
  3. Special undergraduate research projects, activities, and undertakings involving the need for financial assistance (including tuition and other support to pursue internship opportunities).
  4. Attendance and/or participation in music, art, poetry, literature, and other humanities events on and off campus.
  5. Travel, lodging, and related costs incurred by students while attending and participating in the previous activities (including study abroad opportunities).

Following the award and completion of the funding period, students will be expected to provide a final report of their experience, activity, or scholarship to the dean's office.

Apply for this opportunity

The application will require a project narrative describing the project or opportunity and highlighting how this funding will enhance your study of the humanities. We suggest you prepare your narrative (750 words) and detailed line-item budget in advance and be ready to paste them into the application found at the link above.

Please submit your application before April 1, 2025, for consideration.

Please direct any questions to Associate Dean Traci Craig at tcraig@uidaho.edu.
