Imagine 3-dimensional images of every tree in an entire forest! Such data and visualizations are now possible through novel laser technology. Data obtained from aircraft, drones or terrestrial lidar units can help scientists and managers optimize forest growth, simulate fuels treatments and potential effects of wildfire, improve wildlife habitat and more. Join the College of Natural Resources for a demonstration of “Smart Forestry” and learn about related degrees at University of Idaho.

College of Science — 'Speed Dating’ with Tree Rings!
McClure, Room 404

Trees form a growth ring each year around their trunks in response to climate conditions. The width of each year’s ring depends on how wet or dry, or how cold or hot the climate might be that year. As such, tree rings are one of the most powerful ways we can look into the past to see how the climate has changed over thousands of years. In this activity, you will be dating a tree-ring sequence (like a bar code) and the fastest person to do it, WINS! Bring your smiles and a competitive spirit to learn about this science!

Tour the Idaho Tree-Ring Lab to learn about tree-ring science and how’s it’s used in [1] dating archaeological objects, like musical instruments, cabins, historical paintings and coffins, [2] reconstructing temperatures, streamflow, snowpack and fires, and [3] learning more about forest ecology.
